How GeoSnoop finds where a photo was taken
GeoSnoop looks at what is in the picture (buildings, roads and road markings, signs, plants, terrain, light) and compares it with hundreds of millions of photos from around the world whose location is known. Every candidate city gets a score, and you see the places that fit best.
It works from the pixels alone. Location data inside the file (GPS, EXIF) is never used for the guess, so screenshots, saved copies and photos without location data can be searched too.
What you get
- The most likely country, with its chance (free).
- City Matches: the cities that fit best, each with the chance the photo was taken within 25 km of it.
- Country Matches and a map of the likely area (68% chance, sea cut out); an exact spot when GeoSnoop is sure enough.
- Photo Analysis: which parts of your picture point where.
- Sets: up to 20 photos of one place, searched together (with an account and credits).
Photos that work best
Outdoor photos with streets, buildings, landscapes or landmarks give the strongest answers. Close-ups, indoor rooms and photos that are mostly people or sky carry fewer clues, and the answer may stop at a country or a region. When nothing in a picture points to a place, GeoSnoop says "Unknown Location" and charges nothing.
Chances
Every answer is a probability, and GeoSnoop never shows 100%. Check important results yourself, for example on a map or with street-level imagery, and never rely on them alone for decisions about people.
Your photos and your privacy
- Your results are private: only your browser or your account can open them, and they are never shown to search engines.
- Uploads, including their location metadata, are kept to run GeoSnoop and to check and improve its accuracy; this website deletes its copies after 30 days. You see this before you upload.
- No advertising cookies or trackers. Analytics (Statcounter) run only if you allow them. Payments go through Stripe; we never see your card.
Use it responsibly
Before anything is uploaded, everyone confirms they are not using GeoSnoop to stalk, harass, track or surveil anyone. We keep a record of that agreement, suspend accounts that break it and may report unlawful use. Report misuse to abuse@geosnoop.com. Read our responsible-use policy
Questions
- How do I find where a photo was taken?
- Drop it in the box above. Your first photo is free without an account and shows the most likely country; an account with credits shows the cities, the map and the photo analysis.
- Can I find a photo's location without GPS or EXIF data?
- Yes. GeoSnoop never uses that data for its guess; it reads only what is visible in the picture. If your photo does have GPS data, see how to check it yourself for free.
- Is GeoSnoop free?
- One photo is free without an account. A free account gets 10 credits for full results, then 5 country-only searches a day. Plans start at $9.99 a month. See pricing
- How accurate is it?
- It depends on the photo: a street scene usually says far more than a close-up or an indoor room. Every result shows its chances, so you can see how sure GeoSnoop is. Results that name no country are free.
- What happens to my photo?
- It is kept to run GeoSnoop and to check and improve its accuracy; this website deletes its copies after 30 days. Location data in the file is stored with it but never used for the guess. Privacy Policy
- Can I search several photos or a video of one place?
- Yes, with an account and credits: up to 20 photos, or a video your browser turns into still frames (the video itself never leaves your device).
- Is there an API?
- Yes. See the API
